Placements / Volunteers as required.


Ballymoney office, working throughout Northern Ireland with the possibility of occasional work in Great Britain and the Republic of Ireland.

Main purpose of the job:

  • Delivery of high quality ecological consultancy services on time and within budget.
  • Supporting the Director / Principal Ecologist / Senior Ecologist with sales, marketing and business development.
  • Supporting the Director / Principal Ecologist / Senior Ecologist with administration, resourcing and business processes.

Key Duties:

  • Undertaking a wide range of species and habitat surveys, with a focus on bat surveys, to current industry guidance and best practice.
  • Analysis of data to include statistical analyses, spatial analyses in QGIS, bat call sound analysis and analysis of video footage.
  • Working outside of normal office hours on a regular basis during the bat and newt survey seasons (Mar-Sep).
  • Producing high-quality ecological reports and advice on time and within budget.
  • Secure and manage a range of wildlife licences in relation to project needs, as required.
  • Managing projects, with support as required by the Director / Principal Ecologist / Senior Ecologist, from project design to client liaison and delivery of ecological services.
  • Providing training and support to external and internal clients.
  • Liaising with clients, stakeholders and statutory agencies.
  • Assisting with the supervision of Assistant Ecologists, volunteers, placements and sub-consultants and supporting the Director / Principal Ecologist / Senior Ecologist with their overall management
  • Assisting the Director / Principal Ecologist / Senior Ecologist with sales, marketing and business development.
  • Maintaining personal professional development to keep expertise, skills and professional memberships up-to-date and to maximise range of skill set and accreditations.
  • Providing support for the Director / Principal Ecologist / Senior Ecologist and other teams with administration, financial and other business processes.
  • Providing support to the Director / Principal Ecologist / Senior Ecologist in maintaining and improving customer service standards.
  • Organise, repair and maintain equipment.
  • Contribute to business innovation including the development of business methods, products and services.
  • Understand and meet health and safety requirements, and take responsibility for safe working practices.
  • Any other duties as may be reasonably required from time to time.

Please note that work will include lone working, unsocial hours, remote working, travel to sites across NI, GB and ROI, work on construction and demolition sites, carrying equipment up to 4Km at night over uneven and slippery surfaces. Appropriate health and safety policies and measures are in place to ensure risks are minimised as far as possible to protect our staff.

Personnel Specification

Essential Criteria:

  • Degree or postgraduate degree in Ecology or a related discipline.
  • Experience in conducting ecological surveys and assessments.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation, policies and guidelines.
  • Experience in writing technical/scientific proposals, reports and plans.
  • Ability to work independently on multiple projects to deliver to a high standard, on time and within budget
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent IT skills including Microsoft Office (including Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Good working knowledge of GIS (Geographic Information Systems).
  • Commitment to a high standard of work
  • Flexibility and reliability with the ability to work unsocial hours, sometimes at short notice
  • Full UK driving licence and access to a car for business purposes.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Experience of conducting a wide range of bat surveys and assessments and mitigation works.
  • Experience of conducting ecological surveys and assessments for habitats or species other than bats.
  • Experience of securing and managing wildlife licences in relation to bats.
  • Experience of securing and managing wildlife licences in relation to protected species other than bats.
  • Experience of producing successful mitigation plans and management plans for species and habitats.
  • Experience of QGIS.
  • Membership of CIEEM (Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management)
  • NPTC (National Proficiency Tests Council) (CS38) qualification in Tree Climbing and Aerial Rescue.
  • Valid CSR (Construction Skills Register) card.
  • Valid ‘First Aid at Work’ training certificate
  • Experience of conducting risk assessments.
  • Knowledge / skill / experience of Python and / or R.
